Castlewood Canyon State Park - Franktown, CO
We loved hiking at Castlewood Canyon State Park today! There are many easy to difficult hiking trails to choose from, and the park has a lot of other activities like rock climbing, birding, educational programs, photography, and wildlife viewing. Make sure you bring a lunch or snack to enjoy one of the many places to picnic here.
The kiddos, ages 5 and 6, were able to hike the Inner Canyon trail and Lake Gulch trail for a total of two miles. We also enjoyed seeing the Dam Ruins Historic Site just off the Inner Canyon trail and Lake Gulch trail intersection. We ate our lunch on one of the many large boulders near the Dam Ruins Historic Site. There's a small creek that you have to cross on this loop, but during the winter the kids loved walking across the ice.
If you're hiking here during the winter, then make sure you pack microspikes! The beginning of the Inner Canyon trail was steep and icy. Yikes! You could easily take a bad slip here.
